On 1 July 2013 a new, harmonised system of mileage payments will come into effect. The new scheme was developed following a detailed review of mileage allowances. The purpose of the mileage review was to move to a system for payment which responded to fluctuations in fuel prices, met the green agenda and was a simplified and harmonised allowance system. In 2010, after consultation, the new scheme was agreed and signed up to by all the NHS unions for implementation in 2013.
