Commenting on the inflation figures, UNISON, the UK’s largest union, called for a pay rise for hard pressed workers who are struggling to make ends meet. Dave Prentis, UNISON General Secretary, said: “Sustained high inflation, coupled with a prolonged pay freeze then squeeze for millions of public sector workers, has hit families hard. Parents are cutting back on food, clothes, even on things for their children – they are being priced out of basic living. Meanwhile, it is still boom time for British bankers who are dominating the EU bankers’ rich list. “Britain desperately needs a pay rise. If our economy is to grow and we are ever to recover, the government has to put money into people’s pockets so that they can get out and spend.”
