Lives will be lost if plans to re-organise an ambulance service covering five million ­people get the go-ahead, it was feared yesterday. Change would involve closing 53 stations across its region and opening 13 new hubs but that would leave areas, including large towns, with the only ambulance cover nearly 40 miles away, almost an hour’s drive.
